I am a STRAIGHT EDGE..I'm proud!!

Hi there, I am an avid of music fan especially rock music and many iconic punk and hardcore bands like Sex Pistols, The Clash, Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Black Flag and Fugazi keep make me idolize them so much.

However, the style of drugs, rock n' roll and sex just annoyin' me and it same during the 1970's hippie period. For me, that style is just self-destructive. Why would they do that? The term they used is "recreational"..(it's all bollocks!!)

In many rock gigs I attended,a friend of mine would offered me a cigarette, but I politely decline it because I am not a cigarette smoker.(although I used to be).Everytime also when a friend of mine, invited me for a drinking session (alcohol), I had to politely reject it and it goes same with the drugs too. I'm just into music not that "things".

Soon I discover, a new way of lifestyle (or some say a movement) that suit my life without having to dealing with these "chemicals" and it call "Straight edge". Well, wut is actually Straight edge.

According to Sam McPheeters, Dave Stein, Jason O'Toole, and Brian Baker who wrote a book entitled "The Straight Edge Movement", straight edge is a more philosophical offshoot of the punk movement, a reaction to the hedonism and self-destruction that characterised punk. The basic tenet of the philosophy centres around the issue of
self-control. The goal is to regain as much personal control over your own life as possible. Straight edge is the only youth counter-culture to actively discourage drug use, alcohol use, and casual sex.

Those straight edgers known with the sign of xXx or sXe which actually started as the marker for minors on their hands so they couldn't buy alcohol when they are in pub or club.

Many hardcore/punk band especially in Washington USA like Teen Idles, Minor Threat Fugazi, Earth Crisis, Youth of Today and many more has developed "stay punk, stay clean" ethos. According to legend, the drummer for Minor Threat [Jeff Nelson], Ian Mackaye (Minor Threat's vocalist) had commented to his bandmates that the ruler's straight edge was a metaphor for their lifestyle and this can be found in their song "Straight Edge"(1981)

I'm a person just like you
But I've got better things to do
Than sit around and fuck my head
Hang out with the living dead
Snort white shit up my nose
Pass out at the shows
I don't even think about speed
That's something I just don't need

I'VE GOT THE STRAIGHT EDGE

I'm a person just like you
But I've got better things to do
Than sit around and smoke dope
'Cause I know I can cope
Laugh at the thought of eating ludes
Laugh at the thought of sniffing glue
Always gonna keep in touch
Never want to use a crutch

I'VE GOT THE STRAIGHT EDGE - Ends

Although the song only bang out loud for 46 second only, the messages is clear. Ian Mackaye also eschewed the nihilistic tendencies of punk rock, promoting instead the simple and almost simplistic philosophy of "don't drink/don't smoke/ don't fuck."

Out of Step (with the world)

Don't smoke
Don't drink
Don't fuck
At least I can fucking think

I can't keep up
Can't keep up
Can't keep up
Out of step with the world - End

During interview with Touch & Go zine, Minor Threat's Ian Mackaye and Lyle Presslar(guitarist) stated Straight edge to them is someone who is alert enough to benefit from what he or she is doing...

"Lyle: the drug and alcohol is only one side of it anyway, it's a lot more than that, there are other things that can sidetrack you...

"Ian: That's what "don't Fuck" means... a lot of people think that to be straight edge you can't drink, smoke, or have sex and that's silly... what the don't fuck thing is that the whole getting laid and getting head thing

"Lyle: living for sex

"Ian: following your penis around is fucking people up more than anything"

In my opinion, this is healthy and it so simple way of life. Although some of my mate said that I am an old-fashion and conservative with this kind of attitude but I like it and although this thought has nothing to do with religion but I'm pretty sure it suit with my religion too. I am a gig-goer, the adaptation of the straight edge didn't deter my likeness towards music especially rock music. I can still head banging or pogo or floor-punching or moshing from the stage as long I didn't being controlled by the "stuffs" - alcohol, drugs or tobacco.

These simple beliefs have transformed the minds of scores of teens worldwide. Increasingly disenchanted with societal ills, young men and women adopt the straight-edge doctrine as a blueprint to better first themselves, and then the world in which they live. While the original definition of straight-edge only included the rejection of mind altering substances and promiscuous sex, modern interpretations include a vegetarian or vegan diet and an increasing involvement and awareness of
environmental and political issues.

Although in Malaysia, the straight edge is not even a movement and rarely be known to the public but this way of life can be an idealistic way of life to kids that only wanted to have fun with music BUT not alcohol, drugs or tobacco. There are many notable artiste who had indulged this way of life like Ted Nugent, Chris Martins(Coldplay), Daniel Kessler (Interpol) and many more.

There are a lot of thing to do rather being "control" so wanna more about staright edge - Read STRAIGHT EDGE.

Remember - We don't need that "SHIT" to have fun coz the "SHIT" ain't worth enough for your precious life. IF THE KIDS ARE UNITED, THEN WE'LL NEVER BE DIVIDED..

xXx Cheers sXe.

THE most hated OCPD...and he is lazy!!!

Assalamualaikum and hi there, well it's been two month I was M.I.A (due to hectic & tight schedule that disabled me to "blasting" statements on my blog) but I'm back again..

It's 13 months after I was "inducted" or rather "instructed" to be crime reporter for Malay Mail crime desk and during that period I need to build my rapport with many Klang Valley district police chief to gain some information on some crime cases.

Although In KL city, there are four police district (not include Putrajaya) in Cheras, Sentul, Brickfields and Dang Wangi. Every this districts have it's own police chief or we call it Officer-in charge of police district or to be precisely, OCPD.

Well, it's quite challenging to know these lads as they are all have their own character that everybody not only the reporter and the OCPD's men had to understand. Most of them are ok (for me!!) and although some of the days they had their bad days due to non-stop daily crimes pressure but they still treated people like reporter very well.

HOWEVER, there is one OCPD that is so annoying me due to his inability to move his lazy damn fucking hand to pick up the phone or at least to move his lazy finger to text a message to every question on crime cases that occurred in his district. Ladies and gentlemen, I gives you ACP Mohamad Zulkarnain bin Abdul Rahman or better known as Tuan Zulkarnain - the Dang Wangi district police chief.

Some of the reporters from other media claimed that he is not so media-friendly and would only answer to certain reporters. My colleague from Berita Harian said he went to Dang Wangi district police headquarters - IPD Dang Wangi to see Tuan Zulkarnain. Guess what, Tuan Zulkarnaian is in his room at that time and my mate here went there at about 2-3pm.

The worst part, he just stayed at at his room and let my mate here wait for about 3 hours and when he managed to get to see him..it took another almost hour of empty-talking and ended up without no crime news from Dang Wangi district..(Wut a waste!!)

I had an experience with this lad too..whenever some crime case happened at Dang Wangi district, I really need to call him to get his comment or at least some update on an arrest or new development of a pending crime case but when I called him, HE DOESN'T EVEN BOTHER to pick up and he really not even gonna reply my fucking message.

BUT his disturbing behaviour somehow paid at last after his men couldn't even respond to the call from brave street crime-hater who managed apprehended a snatch theft on the morning of May 21. Read - "Men catch snatch thief, cops called ... but taxi ends up taking suspect to station"

I tried to call him but still his lazy-fucking hand could not reach it and answer it. Then I text him with a three pages of messages which not even a second he answered by asked me to call him back (wut a lazy muther-fucker we had here!!) so I called him and straightly I get his "honesty comment"..and you know what that was actaully the first and the last ever talk that I had with him..because his lazy disease" is so chronic..

Whenever crime occurred at Dang Wangi district, I recommend y'all to not ask or call or even text the OCPD to get the info of some crime cases..coz y'all never get it..
Have courtesy at least to call the City's CID chief to get the info..(& I don't care!!)

Cheers!!

FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK...We Salute You!! Part 1

Assalammualaikum and hi there,

When Micheal Jackson died on June 25, the world mourn his demise. His fans can't even believe the news and there's one of his fans in London suddenly broke in tears live in front of the CNN camera when the reporter said MJ had passed away. All of them, thought the reporter was joking but when it revealed the news is genuine and true, the fan suddenly cried hysterically.

MJ's death is another lost to the music world and his departure will always being remembered. Micheal Jackson is not the only one great superstar that should be remember that had rock the world many others like John Lennon, "Godfather of Soul" James Brown, "King of Grunge" Kurt Cobain, Freddie Mercury from Queen, Ian Curtis from Manchester post-punk rock band,Joy Division, "The Man In Black" Johnny Cash and our very own versatile performers, actor and entertainers Tan Sri P.Ramlee and Sudirman Haji Arshad.

These lads have rock the world and they are the legend that will be remember by every people either young or old. They may have their own problem in coping with the fame and sometimes they were so depressed with the attention that have been given to them but that just a part of the parcel.

They left their legacy that cannot being sucked by the changes of the world and it seems their art, album, film and book now has been the favourites among their fans.(I am still watching P.Ramlee's movies although it has been showed for several many times and I still followed Kurt Cobain grunge style!)

Like Jack Black's word in School of Rock movie..FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK..We Salute You!!

Cheers

My Manic Street Preachers and rock and roll epiphany..

Although, I missed their concert in Singapore on April(due to my work commitment), I will be always be a long time die-hard fan for a Welsh iconic rock and roll band, Manic Street Preachers.
I first bought their sixth 2001's album "Know Your Enemy" and since than there's no argument this are the band that among my top 11 bands that I always considered very arty, rebel and against the mainstream sound alongside Radiohead, The Stone Roses, Joy Division, New Order, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Interpol, Mogwai, The Velvet Underground and Nico and Rage Against The Machine..

Well, last Saturday I went to my "favourite" place to hang out - Rock Corner at The Garden, MidValley City,KL..as I flip through the CDs rack by rack, I saw a lot of good stuffs from many legendary bands and singer like Queen, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Nirvana and the best part is I've been told by the sales assistant that since the demise of Micheal Jackson on early Friday moring, many his die-hard fans are flocking to the store to buy the MJ's rarities, singles, box-set collection and albums.

Then,I asked the shop assistant about Manic Street Preachers's new albums entitled "Journal For Plague Lovers", he showed me the copy and without further ado..I pay and listen it inside my car..

The album is actually the ninth studio album for the band and all the lyrics on the album was written by the band's former member, Richey James Edwards who mysteriously dissappear in 1995 on the eve of their USA Tour(the same case like Ian Curtis from Joy Division who hanged himself in the eve of 1980 USA Tour).

As I listen it, I realised that this are the rock and roll epiphany that the band has been "manufactured" since their first album "Generation Terrorist". However, as I flipped through the lyrics inside the album, I found out that many of the songs had brought up topics like Topics include The Grande Odalisque by Ingres, Marlon Brando, Giant Haystacks, celebrity, consumerism and dysmorphia.

And all of this topics has connection with Richey's affection with art and rock and roll. To be honest, I am fascinated with this album and for those who bought this album might hard for them to "digest" the meaning of songs that been played in this album.

With the combination sound of Sex Pistols, Guns N' Roses and The Clash, and the injection of angst-ridden voice of James Dean Bradfield, fast pace guitar plucking by Nicky Wire and drummer, Sean Moore, the album will surely hardly to be missed by their fans.

The trio's James Dean Bradfield(vox/guitar), Nicky Wire(bass/additional vox) and Sean Moore(drums/percussion) has became cult figure throughout English channel since 1986 and have cemented their place as one of the greatest rock and roll band on earth.

At the back of the album's sleeve there a quotation from an Irish playwright,George Bernard Shaw who said : -
"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honourable but more useful than a life spent nothing"

1. "Peeled Apples" (3:33)

MACC absurd jokes..very "funny"...

Assalamualaikum and hi there,

When I read Malay Mail newspaper yesterday, and it stated that my colleague reporter Mr Nevash Nair's laptop and cellphone were confiscated by these "jokers" from MACC or Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission( yeah, rite they are anti-corruption!!) I was so shocked and didn't expect that those three not-so-happy "jokers" that I met when I was grabbing a copy of NST newspaper at the Malay Mail door were actually MACC fellas.

I seriously did not know what the heck those "jokers" doing in our territory and what do I know is that the "jokers" were actually had something "unfinished business" with Mr Nevash Nair.

So I didn't even wanted to bother about it and continued finishing my crime story and later that day only I learn that Mr Nevash Nair has been taken to Selangor MACC office in Shah Alam.

There, he had to produced a tape recording of Kapar MP, YB S.Manikavasagam that claimed to have been told about the "missing" files. Then he had to handed over his laptop to these 'jokers" for "facilitating the investigation" ( I think these "jokers" don't have any laptop so that they dream about having a new laptop for "free").

Great, in my opinion do they really allowed to do that? and won't they should produce a warrant before confiscating people's property? and one more thing they had lodged a police report but it they are the "police" who conducting their own investigation.

Oi, c'mon lar MACC "jokers", where's your integrity & dignity? I browsed to your website and it stated there "PESALAH RASUAH AKAN DIHUKUM & RASUAH ADALAH JENAYAH" but it seems like those who gave y'all information about the corruption are the one that y'all goin' to handcuff them..Hahahahaha

KEEP RISIN'

Cheers

Everything Must Go,Tony!

Thursday, June 18, 2009..two days after I celebrating my first year stint with Malay Mail..that date also marked the last service for our editor-in-chief Tony Francis or TF.

His position has been replaced by the king of blogger and former Malay Mail executive editor, Ahirudin Atan or Rocky Bru.

About a year, I was with TF reign and I am proud with that and that's why in my opinion he is the modern minimalist reformist who reformed back the Malay Mail to be the most fearful newspaper in Klang Valley with the Malay Mail probe and scoop.(hmm, no wonder these days The Star also followed our direction with the establishment of their Star probe).

These easy-going bloke had a joy and despair moment during his time with Malay Mail and he is proud and delightful with that. R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Cheers

A YEAR AGO & Happy Belated Anniversary..

Assalamualaikum and hi there,

June 16, 2008 at exactly 9am..I was so nervous to start that day as I walking through the door at Balai Berita, NSTP Jalan Riong, Bangsar.

I will remember that day as the first day of my life being journalist for Malay Mail (although at that time, Malay Mail was "ditched" and "dumped" by it's "mother", NSTP).

During that day, OC at that time Mr Umakanthan assigned me to PJ Magistrate Court to cover any court cases that have human interest element and at that time I had to figure out how to define human interest as all the hearing at the court are about illegal VCD peddlars.
(only God knows how blur I am at that time!!I really don't have any knowledge about Court reporting)

So I waited there from morning until the court session is over(it really boring!!) and I talked to the defence lawyer and the prosecution attorney about the case that they handling and I managed to get both of the information.(although,I was first nervous and don't know what to do! and almost runaway from the session)

Then when I came back to the office, the desk said the courts session is just my learning session and what I wrote about the session never came out and that's was my first debut about journalism in Malay Mail.(You gotta Do-It-Youself(DIY)) so that you can really be a tough journalist here.
-------------------------------------------------

June 16, 2009..which is six days ago..marked my first anniversary with Malay Mail and we are also have move out from the sacred Balai Berita to our new office at Dataran 3 Dua,Jalan 19/1,PJ..
I also now is a crime reporter for Malay Mail crime desk...many bittersweet experiences I had gain and face with this newspaper although sometimes I really hate it & get piss.. but the bottomline is..NEWS MUST GO ON & IT WILL NEVER END..

HAPPY BELATED 1st ANNIVERSARY..
Cheers!

EYEZART is back..& here we go..

Assalamualaikum and hi there,
Well, I guess this time I had to make a comeback in this blog world for good after about a year EYEZART in hiatus.
As y'all know, Malay Mail now has been changing it's "captain". Tony Francis is out and the blogger king "Rocky Bru" or Ahiruddin Atan is back as editor.
and during his first meeting with reporters and editors(which I'm not there as I was on leave for a week)..he has given us two "major" assignments..
1) Buy a pair of jeans (which I already had)
2) Start a blog
-This is the difficult part to complete it, but later I remember that I had this blog that the last time I was update it about year ago which is after my convocation days and since then, it was nothing..(for me to write, although there a lot of thing keep playing in my mind)
So from now on, this is my blog and..here we go,again...

AIZAT SHARIF
